Goodbye Turkey, Hello Türkiye

Turkey has officially changed its name to “Türkiye”. On 4 December 2021, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan issued a presidential circular calling for traders and government entities to start implementing the use of the name “Türkiye” instead of Turkey, initiating with this the process to change of the country’s name.

In May 2022, Turkey’s World Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu sent letters to the UN and other international organisations requesting for the change to be made official, this was accepted and recognised by the UN in June 2022 and from that moment Turkey became officially “Türkiye”.

Companies trading with Türkiye must make sure the correct country name is being declared in all their Trade Documentation as not being compliant could cause their documents to be rejected and their shipments delayed which can be costly.
